We humans are always seeking to discover new keys to success. But nowadays we’re hearing more and more about something of a rediscovery. After much research, it turns out that across all ethnic, socio-economic, educational, and psychological demographics “one characteristic emerge[s] as a significant predictor of success… grit” (Duckworth).
Psychologist Angela Lee Duckworth has made grit the focus of years of study. She defines grit as “the ability to persevere in pursuing a future goal over a long period of time and not giving up… It is having stamina. It’s sticking with your future, day-in, day-out, not just for the week, not just for the month, but for years and working really hard to make that future a reality. Grit is living life like it’s a marathon, not a sprint.”
Grit. The relentless resolve to keep pursuing a desired goal and not giving up. Wouldn’t you know? Your grandfather was right after all: Success does look a lot like hard work.
The above quotes were taken from a website that provides great motivation and wisdom. I would say that if we (the 2014 Arkadelphia Badger football teams) can display GRIT in our daily practices, film watching, workouts; through our weekly preparation, and during our entire season; we will be BETTER THAN EVER! Grit is more important as a backdrop to all that we do than anything we do. If there is no grit in us, then all the stuff that we do: our practices, workouts, film watching, and various other things are not near as good as they could be. Today is the perfect opportunity to improve. Everybody watched the film of the scrimmage. Whatever your coach told you that you could improve upon, focus on that today. You should not be coached on the same thing over and over. No matter what it is, going hard on every snap, improving your routes, staying on your blocks, tackling, getting off blocks, or running to the ball, what ever it is, MAKE IT HAPPEN TODAY. YOU MUST HAVE A SENSE OF URGENCY TO IMPROVE AS MUCH AS YOU CAN IN TRAINING CAMP. IT IS WHAT IT IS. IT IS TRAINING. Train yourself to do your job habitually so that it is automatic on Friday nights. Mental toughness is the ability to concentrate and perform at a high level when you are physically exhausted or things aren’t going your way. Mental toughness is a collection of attributes that allow a person to persevere through difficult circumstances (such as difficult training or difficult competitive situations in games) and emerge without losing confidence. We are trying to create mental toughness in our players. We are trying to get the Badgers to perform under pressure without losing confidence. We must be mentally tough in order to be better than ever. So, push yourself now so that you can get on top and stay on top and be mentally tough. Take care of your body! Our players must take care of their body. Put the right things into your body to recover for the next day of practice. JUNIOR HIGH SCHEDULE:
Over the weekend I searched for what the characteristics of a great team are. I found many different lists ranging from Forbes magazine to stanford university and many others. All of the different lists had similar characteristics on their lists, but the one that was on every list was “Unity of Purpose.” The unity of purpose is what drives the team every day to work harder, faster, more focussed, and more violently. We know what our purpose is, but everyone must be on the same page and it must drive all of our players no matter what their job is. If we have this unity of purpose, we will be better than ever.
Kenneth Jarboe is a special young man who has worked tirelessly at becoming a better football player throughout the entire time that I have known him. He has outstanding character and it shows every time he shows up at Badger fieldhouse. This July, he experienced a major trial in his life. Kenneth had brain surgery on Wednesday. Many prayers have been prayed for Jarboe AKA “The Freak”. He is doing very well in Little Rock at Children’s hospital. He is doing so well that they are releasing him as we speak. I have been so proud of Kenneth and his progress as a football player and I know that he was looking forward to a great season. Even though it has been taken from him he will return Better Than Ever. I can’t wait to see him recover and progress.
Brandon Matros AKA “Bam” an outstanding football player, baseball player, and young man has also been experiencing a life changing trial as he is recovering from a major hip surgery. As a sophomore, Brandon came to know the entire defense as good as anyone on our team and became a great LB/DE. He had his surgery in late July. Brandon is a young man of outstanding character. He is getting better each day. I can’t wait to see him progress and return Better Than Ever from his trial and surgery.
Today it is time to put it all together. We will do every special team along with scrimmaging our group drills and in Team. It has been a good week overall. After watching the film, we must focus on the details and fine tune all of our individual techniques, fits, and responsibilities. We must do this even when our bodies don’t want to. Don’t let fatigue make you a coward today. Fight through until the very end of practice. You have been through four days of practice your body will not be fresh. The teams that will win, win in practice even when they are fatigued.

It doesn’t matter what day of the week, Sunday through Saturday; it doesn’t matter what time it is Midnight, six am, 5pm, or 7pm; it doesn’t matter what the temperature is 50 degrees or 99 degrees; our default when we run onto the field between the white sidelines is habitual violence. We should habitually use excessive force in everything we do. I have been proud of every group of badgers thus far during our practices. We are by no means perfect, but effort has been good. Today is another opportunity to enhance the habit of using violence to become better than ever. This morning as early as it is, do not let circumstances determine whether you will be violent between the white lines. Be violent no matter what. Concentrate on your job and do it as hard and as fast as you possibly can.
